What is the Political Courage Test?

Utah Congressional Election 2016 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
I do not believe that the government should get between a woman and her doctor and that the only person who should have any decision in such matters is the woman herself.
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
We need to get money out of politics. Limitless spending by corporations in our election process is undermining our democracy and must be fixed.
No Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Yes Do you support alternatives to incarceration for certain non-violent offenders such as mandatory counseling or substance abuse treatment?
No Do you support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders?
The war on drugs has been a failure that has cost this country tens of billions of dollars every year over the last several decades. It has also filled our prisons with hundreds of thousands of non-violent offenders leading the USA to become the world's largest incarcerater. We need to start treating drug addiction as a health problem rather than as a criminal problem.
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No Do you support lowering taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
No Do you support providing tax incentives to businesses for the purpose of job creation?
Tax incentives to businesses have not been shown to lead to any meaningful growth in job creation and more often than not simply leads to the business making larger profits. As such I would not support such tax incentives as a means to spur job creation.
Yes Do you generally support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?
All students deserve a quality education and we should use every tool available to us to ensure that they are able to get that education.
No Do you support building the Keystone XL pipeline?
Yes Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
Yes Do you support increased regulations on the hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") industry?
Yes Do you believe that human activity is contributing to climate change?
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
We need to directly tax polluting sources of energy and industries that have a negative effect on the quality of our air or water and use the money we raise from those taxes to make investments into cleaner sources of energy, such as wind and solar, that wont create thick blankets of smog over places like Salt Lake City or otherwise negatively affect the quality of our air and water.
Yes Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Polling shows that there is strong popular support to implement common sense regulations such as universal background checks and making it more difficult for people with a history of violence or mental health issues from being able to obtain a firearm. So it's really hard not to support more gun control in those cases since there is strong popular support for it and because it does make sense.
No Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
No, I support Obamacare and think that it's only a beginning and that we need to do much more in guaranteeing everyone has access to healthcare.
No Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
Our current immigration laws are broken. People are entering the country illegally because it's currently too complicated and takes to long to enter the country legally. We need to streamline the immigration process so that it takes months and not years. We need to end the deportations of non-violent immigrants and allow those already living here to legalize their residency status and allow them to apply for citizenship 3-5 years later. We should allow them to have the same rights as any other immigrants so that they no longer have to live in the shadows.
Yes Do you support same-sex marriage?
I support full LGBT equality.
No Should the U.S use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the United States from possessing a nuclear weapon?
No Do you support increased American intervention in Iraq and Syria beyond air support?
We should avoid unnecessary military intervention and seek diplomatic solutions when possible.
No Do you support allowing individuals to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts?
We should not privatize social security.

We need to close corporate tax loopholes that are currently allowing some of the nation's most profitable corporations to avoid paying most or any of their taxes.
Air and Water quality: tax pollution and use that money to make the investments into cleaner energy. Healthcare: We have over 30 million people in this country without access to healthcare; that is unacceptable and we must fix it. Instead of having people pay health insurance premiums into what are often costly or insufficient healthcare plans we could instead have people pay into medicare so that we can expand medicare to include everybody instead of just the elderly. We also need to allow people to access their full potential by giving them a living wage and paid family leave.
